Are you interested in what the current prices of real estate? If so, you must have accidentally found your way to our site. That's okay. It happens to the best of us. While you're here, why not stay and learn about biotechnology? Sure, you might not have a clue as to what biotechnology is but doesn't that give you more reason to want to keep reading? We sure hope you do. If not, that's okay. There are plenty of other people reading this website who want to know what exactly biotechnology is.

There's a standard definition out there, that the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, came up with to define what biotechnology is. They define biotechnology as: "Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use." It might take you the entire 3 hour exam at your dentist to figure out what that exactly means. At least now you know what biotechnology is.

If you have any interest at all in the field of biotechnology then you probably already had an inkling as to what biotechnology is. Now you have a clear definition. To make it simpler for you, biotechnology, in the simplest of terms, takes living organisms or products from living organisms to modify the health of humans or the human environment.

There are four main industrial sectors in which biotechnology has applications in. Those areas are health care, crop production and agriculture, environmental and non food crop production. Some examples of uses of biotechnology are the fermentation and manufacturing of organic products such as milk, cleaning up contaminated industrial sites, the production of biological weapons, gene therapy and drug production. Pain killers you were prescribed by the doctor you went to might have been produced through biotechnological means. Kind of cool, right?

There are five different branches of biotechnology: bioinformatics, blue biotechnology, green biotechnology, red biotechnology and white biotechnology. Bioinformatics solves biological problems through computation techniques and is mainly used in areas such as proteomics and functional genomics. Blue biotechnology is in reference to marine and aquatic uses of biotechnology. Green biotechnology is used in conjunction with agricultural processes. Red biotechnology is used in the medical field and white biotechnology is used in the processes related to the industrial field such as studying chemicals that might be found in tubes made of plastic at a contaminated waste site.
